VIC:Brumby gives thumbs down to by-election

Victorian Premier JOHN BRUMBY has given the thumbs down to a by-election before the
state poll following the bitter resignation of MP CRAIG LANGDON.

But the decision on a snap poll in the seat of Ivanhoe .. sparked by Mr LANGDON's resignation
yesterday just three months before the state election .. is in the hands of lower house
Speaker JENNY LINDELL.

She has 30 days from Mr LANGDON's resignation to issue a writ for a by-election ..

and the opposition has called on her to issue a ruling quickly.

The premier's suggested a by-election .. which would cost about 350 thousand dollars
.. would be pointless so close to the November 27 state poll.
