Vic: Count on in Higgins by-election

The race for former treasurer PETER COSTELLO's Melbourne seat is almost over with polling
booths in the Higgins by-election now closed.

The polls closed at 6pm (AEDT) and the count is underway.

Liberal candidate KELLY O'DWYER is expected to easily clinch the blue ribbon seat ..

despite an expected green backlash.

But Greens candidate CLIVE HAMILTON hopes to at least take the Liberals to preferences
for the first time in the seat's 60 year history.

The Liberals have a 7 per cent margin.

More than 88,000 people are enrolled to vote in Higgins .. which encompasses the affluent
inner southeast suburbs of Toorak .. South Yarra and Prahran.
