FED:Convoy on way to Parliament House=5

Australian Greens leader Bob Brown said the convoy seemed "like a bit of a flop" adding
for every truck that had turned up another five had stayed away.

"It hasn't blockaded anything," he told reporters.

"But it has got the moaners' brigade in town to moan about everything in general and
nothing in particular."

Senator Brown said the low numbers were a reflection on Mr Abbott.

"This is Tony Abbott's flop, but they're being led on by him because he wants an election.

That's why the truckies are in town."

The protesters did not have any common thread of complaint, Senator Brown said.

"It's just a general smorgasbord of whingers."

NSW:Detainees remain on Villawood roof

SYDNEY, April 25 AAP - Three detainees are still on the roof of Sydney's Villawood
Detention Centre as activists plan a protest to support them.

Social Justice Network spokesman Jamal Daoud says the immigration department has stopped
negotiating with the protesters.

"It's only the security guards from Serco (the private company operating the centre)
that are negotiating with them," Mr Daoud told AAP.

"They've been on hunger strike since Wednesday but they're taking water.

"They are very weak and distressed."

The protest is now in its sixth day with Iranian Majid Parhizkar, 24, and two stateless
Kurds, Mehdi and Amir, showing no sign of coming down from the rooftop.

A Department of Immigration spokeswoman told AAP the situation was still the same,
with the department providing water for the detainees but they would have to come down
to get food.

"The centre is calm," she said.

A riot by up to 100 detainees on Wednesday night left nine buildings at the detention
centre gutted by fire.

Twenty-two of the protesters were transferred to Silverwater Correctional Centre and
have been questioned by police, while the others are back inside the centre.

The Refugee Action Coalition is staging a rally at noon on Monday.

"The recent unrest in Villawood makes it extremely urgent to show community support
for refugees," Nick Riemer of the Refugee Action Coalition said in a statement.

"It's an extraordinary irony that both Labor and Coalition politicians talk of refugees
having committed crimes.

"The damage to property on Wednesday night is nothing compared to the brutalisation
of innocent lives caused by mandatory detention itself."

Police say they have no concerns about the march if it remains peaceful.

NSW Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch told reporters at the weekend that all members
of the community have the right to engage in peaceful and lawful protests.

"If that is the intent of this gathering on Monday, there will be no problem from us.

The only time it will become an issue is if people don't obey the direction of police
or act unlawfully," he said.

QLD:Jobs grow despite floods

Queensland Treasurer ANDREW FRASER says a statewide growth in jobs despite the state's
flooding crisis is a remarkable result.

Today's figures from the Bureau of Statistics shows Australia's unemployment rate at
five per cent in January .. its lowest level in almost two years.

In Queensland .. the rate fell from six per cent in December to 5.6 per cent .. and
Mr FRASER says the state's seen four thousand 600 new jobs and 18 straight months of growth.

But he's noted the ABS has reported an impact on their sample because of the floods
.. meaning the figures have to be treated with a level of caution.

Mr FRASER says the government's pledge to create 100-thousand new jobs before its term
ends has just over 16-thousand positions left to go.

VIC:Brumby gives thumbs down to by-election

Victorian Premier JOHN BRUMBY has given the thumbs down to a by-election before the
state poll following the bitter resignation of MP CRAIG LANGDON.

But the decision on a snap poll in the seat of Ivanhoe .. sparked by Mr LANGDON's resignation
yesterday just three months before the state election .. is in the hands of lower house
Speaker JENNY LINDELL.

She has 30 days from Mr LANGDON's resignation to issue a writ for a by-election ..

and the opposition has called on her to issue a ruling quickly.

The premier's suggested a by-election .. which would cost about 350 thousand dollars
.. would be pointless so close to the November 27 state poll.

Fed: Sydney search images reveal Kororan's secret weapon

Fed: Sydney search images reveal Kororan's secret weapon

By Max Blenkin, Defence Correspondent

CANBERRA, April 9 AAP - New underwater images of the sunken German raider Kormoran
reveal for the first time the hidden torpedo tube which most likely spelled the end of
HMAS Sydney.

The images, taken 2,500 metres beneath the Indian Ocean this week, show the oval-shaped
port placed beneath the waterline of the Kormoran, which was disguised as a merchant ship.

From this was fired a torpedo which struck Sydney's bow, eventually sending her to
the bottom of the sea along with all of its 645 crew.

The images of the Kormoran follow photos taken in recent days of the nearby wreck of
the Sydney, providing new clues to the fate of the ships after their ferocious clash off
Western Australia in World War II.

Historian Dr Tom Frame says it is likely Kormoran fired the torpedo at Sydney in the
opening stages of the battle on the afternoon of November 19, 1941.

"Plainly the damage to Sydney suggests that the torpedo was deployed, that it did create
a major rupture to the ship's hull port side forward and this had a lot to do with Sydney
being disabled and unable to manoeuvre," he said.

"It probably explains too, in part, why it looked to Kormoran as though Sydney was
attempting to ram her.

"Essentially, Sydney was not under command because it had suffered devastating damage."

In its 1999 report, a parliamentary committee which examined the Sydney loss concluded
this torpedo was vital.

"The committee believes a strong case can be made that the Kormoran's underwater torpedo
capability played a major role in the defeat of Sydney," it said.

The images obtained by a remotely-operated vehicle reveal much of Kormoran was completely
obliterated by the explosion of some 300 sea mines stored in the aft holds and probably
destined to be laid off Australian ports.

In the battle, a few Sydney shells struck Kormoran, starting an uncontrollable fire
in the engine room. With the blaze approaching the mines, Kormoran's captain Theodor Detmers
ordered the ship scuttled and told the crew to abandon ship.

It blew up with a shattering explosion that destroyed the vessel's rear half.

Search director David Mearns said it was amazing that Detmers - who left Kormoran last
- and those in the final lifeboat with him somehow miraculously avoided being hit by debris
raining down for hundreds of metres around their vessel.

He said the state of the Kormoran's wreckage was again consistent with German accounts
of the battle.

What remained added some useful information to the puzzle.

The underwater torpedo tubes, one on each side, were clearly visible, as were the curious
downward pointing rust formations, known as rusticles.

Still intact were two 5.9 inch guns in the forward holds. Also visible were the port
and starboard above-waterline torpedo tubes, their concealment flap still in the raised
position.

Mr Mearns said his team had been able to verify methods used by the Germans to conceal
their guns in a way that allowed them to escape detection by other ships, but also be
brought speedily into action.

"There has been considerable doubt about the German claims that they could de-camouflage
in a matter of seconds so it was especially important that we try to document exactly
how the concealment flaps and covers were engineered," he said in a report on the HMAS
Sydney search website.

"In terms of the engineering what we found was ingeniously simple and obviously designed
for fast and efficient operation."

SYDNEY, Dec 6 AAP - Separate fires forced the evacuation of two blocks of units in
Sydney early today.

Firefighters were this morning battling a fire at a unit block at Mt Druitt in Sydney's

at Castle Hill.

Crews were called to the Mt Druitt unit block just after 6am (AEDT), when a fire broke
out in the garbage chute of the Beames Ave building.

Three crews are working to contain the fire, which forced 15 people to evacuate the
three-storey building.

Earlier, a fire broke out in the garage of a block of units in Crane Rd at Castle Hill,
in Sydney's northwest.

The three-storey 50 unit block was evacuated at about 3am (AEDT).

Around 20 firefighters worked for two hours to extinguish the blaze, which destroyed
one of the units.

PERTH, Aug 15 AAP - West Australian police officers were expected to rally outside

the union has asked that be delayed until tomorrow," the minister said.

"WA Police agree officers deserve a pay rise. The police union wants its members to

NT: Katherine flood victims head home to rebuild lives

By Karen Michelmore

KATHERINE, NT, April 8 AAP - A flowerpot and ironing board cover float by in what is
left of Helga Jung's home.

An overturned bookshelf lies half submerged near a soggy purple couch and rows of filing
cabinets in the adjoining room are hidden under murky brown water.

Victims of the devastating Katherine floods have begun returning to their water-logged
homes as the town slowly returns to normal.

"I'm just amazed at how high the water got, it's just heart breaking," said Ms Jung.

More than 600 residents were evacuated and some 100 homes affected when Katherine,
300km south of Darwin, began to be inundated with floodwater last Wednesday night.

"I tried to grab whatever I could, but then the lights went out," Ms Jung said.

"I tried to shut the glass door to stop the water coming in, but it was gushing in."

Life in the Northern Territory's third largest town is now beginning to return to normal
as floodwaters quickly recede.

The main supermarket had reopened and locals were today stocking up after the worst
flood since 1998, when the entire town was submerged.

The water level was dropping by 1.5 metres a day, and at midday (CST) the swollen Katherine
River was 17.65m high.

"I'm just amazed at how low the water's got," said Ms Jung, standing knee deep in water
in her house.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Clare Martin flew into Katherine with three government
ministers to plan the long-term reconstruction effort, with insurers estimating the damage
bill will run into millions of dollars.

"There's a lot activity getting things back to normal happening already," Ms Martin said.

"I'm feeling very hopeful that for the people of this region it won't be too long before
most normal activity is happening."

She conceded things could have been done better, with some residents unhappy they were
not given adequate warning of the impending disaster.

"Maybe looking back there could have been more information given," Ms Martin said.

"I think there's always lessons learned. The sad fact of life is the territory does
deal with a number of disasters and I think we deal with them on the whole very effectively."

Many Katherine residents were today coming to grips with the big clean-up ahead.

Locals were hosing mud off furniture and floors, throwing out destroyed chairs, fridges
and washing machines, but all were resilient and eager to shrug off the tragedy.

"It's just part of life. You don't worry about all those things, said resident Phil Boyle.

Like many others he is exhausted, having bunked down with 25 others in one house over
the past few nights.

"I went and slept somewhere else last night and had a restful sleep away from all those
kids running, screaming and fighting," he said.

But for Ms Jung and her partner Justin Tysoe, the clean-up may last a little longer.

"We actually brought the pressure hose, we thought we would try and clean-up a bit,"

Ms Jung said.

"But there's just no point, we'll have to wait for the water level to drop some more."
