TAS: Activists to celebrate 10th anniversary of UN decision

Activists will hold low-key celebrations on both sides of the Tasman this weekend to
remember a defining moment in Tasmania's rocky path to gay law reform.

Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesman RODNEY CROOME says this Easter Sunday
is the 10th anniversary of a United Nations decision that was a turning point in the battle
to decriminalise homosexuality.

Responding to a complaint filed in December 1991, the UN Human Rights Committee found
the state's laws criminalising homosexuality -- which carried a maximum 21-year jail term
-- were in breach of the International Convenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Mr CROOME was a key player in the long campaign that finally achieved gay law reform
on May the first, 1997.

He now lives Wellington, New Zealand.
